PORTUGUÊS: leia abaixo.
======================================
BIRTH documents an important period in my musical development, because it shows the main electronic recordings made before my debut album, ROUND MI, released ten years ago. In late 2000, around my 18th birthday, I got my first synthesizer, the Roland XP-30. Since the beginning of that year I had been taking music theory and keyboard lessons, and building electroacoustic pieces on the computer.

With the synth, I immediately began recording, exploring my creativity and developing my musical sensitivity through sound research, improvisations, instant compositions and other forms of expression. All the pieces presented here were created this way, without additional sounds. Everything you hear was created and recorded in real time.

"Midnight" is my first work with the new instrument. It's a careful improvisation of harmonies and melodies with arpeggiator passages. "Evening Falls", "Song of the First Electron" and "Somewhere Between Canopus and Rigel" are from the same period. They were part of "October to December", a first tentative album assembled at that time.

"The Rings of Jupiter" and "Un Autre Poème Électronique" were recorded respectively before and after ROUND MI (2001 and 2003). They already show a more introspective and abstract sound, that would be further explored in later productions. The 2003 piece received its title in 2008, on the 50th anniversary of "Poème Électronique", an important work in the history of electronic music, composed by Edgard Varèse.

"Mojave Night Sky" was recorded in July 2002, in between ROUND MI's final sessions. It was made as my contribution to an international gathering of Tangerine Dream fans, held in 2003 in the Mojave Desert in the United States. According to the event's organizer, Vic Rek, the piece was played as ambient music while musicians set the stage for a concert that happened during the convention. This piece is my first deliberate attempt at ambient music. The final result was interesting, despite being different from what I intended.

Throughout the years, these recordings were kept intact and unreleased. BIRTH is part of an ongoing project of releasing archive material, which will be finished by 2013. These old recordings are being released in their original form, without any alteration, unless strictly necessary. In the case of BIRTH, the track "Somewhere Between Canopus and Rigel" has several moments of distortion. This distortion happened due to my lack of recording skills in those days. Even today, I couldn't eliminate this feature without compromising the flow of the music. The defect is resolved musically, thus it becomes part of the music itself - the kind of thing that happens when you compose instantly.

When the archive project is finished, I will publish my last unreleased album, MANIFESTO. Then, with the discography of these first 13 years consolidated, I'll be able to work only on new projects.

The cover for BIRTH is a photo taken by Aline Sabino, my wife, of the landscape we see from our living room window, at an autumn dusk. The colours are real, except for a little extra contrast for the cover production. The photo was taken in 2011 and immediately selected to present this album.

===========================================

"Evening Falls", "Song of the First Electron" e "Somewhere Between Canopus and Rigel" são do mesmo período.
