80s Digital Piano + Chorus & Delay - aka Alternative MKS-20, Part 2

from Works In Progress, Demos and Experiments by Gustavo Jobim

about

The elusive sounds from Roland MKS-20 are in the hands of collectors. I've recorded an alternative to the MKS-20 using Roland P-330 as the sound source, then going into an external analogue BBD chorus (same chips as those used in the original Rolands of that era). Now, P-330 has the same sound generator as the MKS-20. But how about other sources for the piano? After selling my P-330 due to lack of space and a cash emergency, I tried the same combo with a different source for the piano. This time it's from another late 80s synth, Yamaha TG-77, the patch is preset bank 1 patch A12 "AP.Ivory", going into the same choruis (embedded in a Novation Super Bass Station synth, which has an audio in), and then an excessive ping pong delay because it feels good... and what do you know? It's the same kind of sound. The secret is in the chorus. Now don't go "it's not the same as the original", if you can afford the original MKS-20 and have the space for it, then lucky you. I'm good with this sound here.
